Meet Bierfilzl
The Original Beer Felt Coaster
Crafted from 5mm Merino wool felt to absorb condensation, protect your tables, and quiet the clatter of every pour.
What are Bierfilzl?
The Bavarian History Behind the Felt
Long before disposable cardboard coasters existed, 19th-century taverns across Bavaria relied on a far more durable, natural solution: Bierfilzl. The word translates to “beer felt.”
Up until the late 19th century, wool felt coasters were a tavern staple across the region. They not only served to protect the furniture from unsightly rings, but also kept out falling leaves and uninvited flying guests from cold pints. The invention of thick paper coasters in the 1880s marked the demise of their felt counterparts, but happily, the original name stuck. To this day, Bavarians still call coasters of all kinds Bierfilzl.
In keeping with tradition, we craft our Bierfilzl from thick, natural German merino wool felt to bring that same handsome, durable utility into the modern home and protect your surfaces in timeless style.
The Performance Difference:
Why Merino Wool Felt Matters
The Thirst is Real: Dense 5mm German Merino wool absorbs up to 30% of its weight in moisture.
No Clatter, Zero Cling: Releases cleanly from sweaty glassware without suctioning, sticking, or clattering onto the floor.
Table Armor: A soft, thermal barrier that shields vulnerable hardwood, marble, and glass from heat and water rings.
Mess-Averse by Nature: Wool’s built-in lanolin acts as a natural forcefield against drips, spills, and grime, making spot-cleaning effortless.
Tabletop Jewelry: Rich, saturated hues that pull a room together, whether you prefer nuanced neutrals or an unapologetic pop of color.
Perfect Companions:
