Cultivating a Creative Spirit
Robbie Simon is an LA-based artist and designer whose bold, bright and colorful paintings and designs have been used for some of our favorite musicians including Allah-Las, Kevin Morby, Patti Smith and many others. At his Eagle Rock home and studio, he shared where he creates and how he finds joy in the creative process.
“Joy in the studio for me comes from problem solving, which is often the culmination of experiences accrued over the years. I try to take on a disparate variety of projects and enjoy the challenge in effectively adapting the art to seemingly unrelated mediums.
My key to having fun in the process is not taking the work too seriously. Indulge curiosities, experiment, make a mess, laugh if you make something that stinks and then try again until you do it better.”
Incorporating Color Into Design
Robbie is not afraid of color in his work, and in his home. Whether it’s a pop of color, or a more unabashed wave, Robbie sees it as an opportunity to show off your personality in your own unique way.
“The feeling I want to give off in my home is absolutely the same as I hope comes off in my art - colorful, warm, intentional and to be enjoyed! I think all good homes, and art, express the personality of those who live there/made them. So much of all creative endeavors is in how we balance space and effect. With that in mind, a painting and a home are really not too different.”
