Good Felt vs Bad Felt

"For the record, pilling is only good at picking up dirt, looking messy, and making it seem you stopped caring. Merino solves all that."

— Daniel Lantz

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

You’ve probably noticed a lot of things around lately claiming to be felt. Upon closer inspection, however, you will notice that very few of them claim to be Merino wool felt. These mysterious felt like substances are often not felt at all. Most are some sort of petro-chemical concoction that got squeezed out of a machine somewhere. Others are bottom quality wool fibers known as dead hair. Whatever the provenance, they all have one thing in common: pilling. Non stop, out of control pilling that starts the minute you get it home.

For the record- Pilling is only good at picking up dirt, looking messy, and making it seem you stopped caring. Merino solves all that. The secret is a natural crimp along the fibers that lock them all together. That crimp effect cannot be re-produced in low quality fibers which fall away and cause pilling.

Worst of all, they don’t last usually and end up in the waste cycle too soon where, of course, they can’t be recycled or bio-degrade. Built in obsolescence is just not our thing. We use Merino specifically because we like to build things that have long useful lives and bio-degrade naturally when they are done. We use only the worlds best felt from the world’s best makers.

our felt factories

Our Felt Factories

There are only a few factories that we source from, all located in a small region of Bavaria that keep only the highest standards of quality of wool and traditional practices to maintain the level of superior felt. The demand for this incredible textile is far exceeding the output causing longer lead times and more competition to obtain this precious commodity. Our incredible felt is not comparable to the lower grade executions and comes at a cost for its quality with prices being similar to quality leather hides.
